I“Without tragedy, no one can laugh...”
A wild storm shakes a small East Norfolk coastal town and sets off a series of events that changes the lives of all its residents.
Set in the Edwardian world of 1907, The Sea is a fascinating blend of high comedy, biting social satire and poetic tragedy. It is a glimpse of the lives and hopes of the time, as the townsfolk start to feel the greater oncoming storm of the new century.
The play is both a tragedy and a comedy - as one of the characters declares “Without tragedy, no one can laugh...”, and this is very much a line spoken by Edward Bond himself. A tragedy sparks the events in the play, but it is the characters themselves that provide the comedy and the sense of hope.
The Sea was first produced at the Royal Court Theatre, London, in 1973.
